Graduate studies in CMD are primarily research based and will consist of a course as well as a thesis component. Graduating students will have to have demonstrated skills and expertise in computer science and arts & design.   The PhD in CMD will require 8 HCE beyond an undergrad degree plus thesis or an installation/body of work. A typical student entering the PhD program with a Master’s degree should be able to complete the PhD program within 3-4 years.

Course Requirements

  • The five courses required in the Masters in CMD. (Transferred in if CMD Masters has been done)
  • One additional graduate level course in either Design or Art
  • One additional graduate level course in Computer Science
  • One other additional graduate level course

PhD Candidacy

  • Current UofC candidacy processes will apply.

Thesis/Body of Work requirements

  • A thesis or an installation/body of work. The installation/body of work route will be accompanied by a write-up that presents evidence that the work in worthy of either publication or international recognition. This will be examined by the supervisors, the supervisory committee, an examiner internal to UofC and an external examiner as an appropriate expert in the appropriate field as approved by Graduate Studies.

While the student’s principal focus for the master thesis / body of work may be either in Design & Arts or in Computer Science, their work will contain aspects of both. Similar competencies will be demonstrated for a CMD PhD student with the provision that CMD will up hold the definition of a Doctoral Thesis as stated in the UofC Handbook of Supervision and Examination: “The doctoral thesis must embody original work, and must constitute a significant contribution to knowledge. It should contain evidence of critical understanding of the relevant literature. The material embodied in the thesis should merit publication.”
